UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS
Understanding the court process.
The path depends on the case.
Every situation is different. This is a general overview of how a case can move through court.
1Initial appearance
Often the first court date, where the court informs the defendant of the charge.
2Preliminary hearing
In felony cases, an evidentiary hearing to determine whether probable cause exists to believe that a felony occurred and the defendant committed it.
3Motions & discussions
When appropriate, we file motions and discuss possible resolutions with the prosecutor.
4Resolution or trial
The case may be resolved through a settlement or proceed to trial.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Practical questions, answered.
How are consultations scheduled?
Contact the office by phone or use the request form.
What should I bring?
Bring your paperwork, important dates, and questions.
When will we discuss fees?
Ask about the fee arrangement, payments, potential additional costs and what the quoted scope includes. Request an explanation of the engagement agreement before signing it.
When does representation begin?
Requesting an appointment does not mean an attorney-client relationship exists. Confirm whether the lawyer has agreed to represent you and whether you need to complete an engagement agreement.
